Traditional Upholstery

Traditional Upholstery

The highly skilled and friendly team at The Upholsterers Bexhill-on-Sea are committed to keeping traditional upholstery craftsmanship techniques alive. We have the skill, patience and attention to detail for your job, and where feasible, the team aims to undertake any furniture repairs at the shop using these traditional methods from centuries ago, that have been handed down over the generations of upholsterers.

We are very appreciative of being able to continue a rewarding and traditional skilled trade, which has barely changed in all these years.

Our traditional upholstery methods using hand tools, will last your furniture for many generations to come.

On inspecting your chair, armchair or sofa our team will start the re-upholstery, re-seating or repairs needed by removing all old material and fabric so that we can see the original frame structure. Any defects to the structure are repaired before moving onto the first stage of the process, which involves added webbing to help give your furniture strength and form a base on which to build the other many layers that are used in the traditional process.

The second stage of the process that our team will apply is hessian which is added above the webbing layer and helps to give extra additional strength to the furniture. For the third stage we add loose hair which is tied to the hessian and helps create a layer of padding. Cotton felt is applied in the fourth stage to avoid any hair pushing through the furniture when sitting on it. In the fifth stage our team will apply calico above the cotton felt layer, then tightly pull this over all current layers before firmly fixing in place.

Finally we can add the customers chosen upholstery fabric for the perfect finishing touch and wow factor!
